I Imagine I Can See Her,
Her or Something of Her
Although I love "Cosmicomics", my first introduction to Italo Calvino's work was through Radiolab, where I first heard "The Distance to the Moon."
I can't deny that the themes of desire for the unattainable were what made Qfwfq's narrations so painfully relatable to me. But what I loved the most about "The Distance to the Moon" was before the moon left. There is a magical relationship between the moon, its ecosystem, and the people who visit it, and how the collection of "moon-milk" becomes such a central activity that it structures a community's relationship with a lunar landscape.
The collaborative nature of foraging on the moon's surface was a ritual, social bonding, competition, and familiarity; as a community member appears to develop a more intimate knowledge of this,
they become selfish, and the moon recedes into the distance.
